A few years ago there
was an add on the TV… I can’t remember what it was advertising, but a
gentleman was in a large department store, in a sea of underwear, trying
to buy a gift for his lady. He asked the young female assistant for
help, she held up a bra and shouted across the store, something like
‘the man wants one of these in red’ Of course all heads turned and you
really felt his embarrassment! I’m sure it would never actually happen,
but buying from a large, store if it’s your first lingerie gift
purchase, must be a daunting task.
For nearly thirty
years I worked in small lingerie boutiques and at Christmas time you
could spot the first timers and really felt for them. They would pass
the shop front several times before diving in like a frightened rabbit,
hoping no one they knew in the passing traffic had seen them! Of course
inside it’s much more discreet than a large store and once they realised
we really were there to help and not to embarrass them, they were fine.
You see, we want you
and your lady, to be pleased with your purchase. We don’t want exchanges
any more than you do, so do our best to make sure we ask the right
questions about what you’re looking for! So be prepared… below is list
of a few things you may be asked. If you’ve done your homework, you gift
is more likely to be a success.
Buy something she will
like!
Ok, maybe you’d love
to see her in a minuscule lace body, skimpy g-string or a fluffy ‘Mrs
Christmas’ baby-doll, but would she honestly want it? It’s really
something for you, more than for her… Buy it if you want to, but it’s
much more likely to be worn if you have also bought her something that
she’ll love too!
Over the Christmas
period we would serve around 500 gents with gifts, in the New Year we
only ever had about 30 exchanges, and they were mainly to swap something
for a size up or down.
Note: before
you make your purchase, check the store policy on refunds and exchanges.
Some stores will not exchange any briefs/g-strings, even with their
brand tags still attached.
NEVER buy something
that she will have to lose weight to wear. Your gift should make her
feel beautiful, sexy and wanted just as she is
J
Quite often we had
chaps arrive in the shop who had no idea of any of her sizes. When
asked, they’d say ‘about your height’, but since they’d been brave
enough to come in, they wanted to go out with a gift.
We sold beautiful,
long, authentic, Japanese kimono robes and short silk wraps. Liquid
satin in fabulous colours and prints, every woman would love. Just
putting one on makes you feel feminine, so even if you have no idea on
size…all is not lost.
If you want to buy
any kind of bra/basque or briefs/thongs set you will need to know
sizes. Try if you can to look in her lingerie draw, in the back of
most items you will find the label with a selection of sizes for
different countries. Copy this out including the brand name, it will all
help the assistant. If your lady has a selection of sizes in the drawer,
pick a set that you’ve seen her wearing recently. Does she like
underwires in her bra, padding or lace? Does she wear briefs, shorts or
g-strings. If she always normally wears a brief, make sure that you buy
a brief to match. If you’d like to see her in the g-string, buy that
too, but not instead!
On a practical note,
briefs always wear out before bras and they’re quite often half the
price, so it’s a good idea to buy at a ratio of 2 briefs : 1 bra, to
prolong the life of your gift.
Colour, some women
love colour and like their lingerie to match their daywear, others
prefer to wear white, ivory beige and black. Take note of what you saw
in that lingerie draw…
If things are
difficult and money is tight, she may prefer an everyday set of
underwear to a basque, she can only wear for special occasions, or in
the bedroom.
A suspender belt can
turn an everyday set of lingerie into a sexy set. Metal, suspender-ends
are best, as they’re more secure.
If you buy anything
with suspenders, don’t forget to buy stockings too, she may not have
any.
Again on a practical
note: When buying stockings or hold-ups it’s a good idea to buy two
pairs the same colour. When one leg of each pair becomes laddered the
two spare legs will make a new pair!
Finally presentation,
it’s difficult to wrap a fabric item in paper and make it look good. We
always wrapped the items in tissue and put them into beautiful gift
boxes. They looked lovely and she’s unlikely to guess what’s inside
without having a peek!
